Harry Bertoia’s delicately industrial wire side chairs are among the most recognized achievements of mid-century modern design. Like Saarinen and Mies, Bertoia found sublime grace in an industrial material, elevating it beyond its normal utility into a work of art.

With her typical modesty, Florence Knoll described her own line of desks as the “meat and potatoes” which had to be provided. “I did it because I needed the piece of furniture for a job and it wasn’t there, so I designed it.” While this may have been the motivation for the 1961 Table Desk, the result is anything but a fill-in piece.
