Herman Miller X HAY
Herman Miller is built on a legacy of creative collaboration. In a first-of-its-kind collection, the Danish design house HAY thoughtfully reimagines eight classic Eames designs for a new generation.
Herman Miller X HAY
Through a first-ever collaboration between Herman Miller and the Danish company HAY, eight Eames classics have been reimagined in new materials and colors. Rolf and Mette Hay founded their company 20 years ago, and they cite Charles and Ray Eames’ experimental yet rigorous approach to design as the model for their own process. Inspired by archival Eames designs, Alexander Girard’s textiles, and HAY’s forward-thinking perspective, Mette Hay has created a fresh new palette for these iconic pieces.
This joint collaboration began over 20 years ago—well before HAY joined Herman Miller Group (now MillerKnoll). When Rolf Hay began working in the industry he paid a visit to the Eames exhibition at the Vitra Design Museum. That 1997 Vitra exhibition—which predated the point when he and Mette decided to strike out on their own with a company that would bring Danish design into the present day—pushed them both to start thinking in an Eamesian spirit.
Eames Office thrived on collaborations with clients and creative partners like textile master Alexander Girard. In this spirit, Rolf and Mette Hay pay homage to both Herman Miller design greats by using a reissued Jacob's Coat textile designed by Girard as a new look for the Eames Sofa Compact.
In addition to the expanded color palette, the HAY-selected materials riff on the respect for experimentation inherent in every Eames design: The Eames Hang-It-All, which sports cast-glass balls in place of the original painted wood, and the Eames round occasional and low wire tables with cast-glass tops that can be used indoors and out.
Eames Sofa Compact
With modern lines and a trim profile, the Eames Sofa Compact not only fits comfortably in small spaces but also holds its own in larger rooms. A versatile choice for home or office, this sofa – via a special collaboration with HAY – has a bright new look in Alexander Girard's vibrantly striped Jacobs Coat fabric.
Eames Molded Plywood Lounge Chair
The LCW is the result of the Eameses’ belief that an entirely new type of chair could be made by using heat to mold plywood. As simple as it is comfortable, this iconic piece continues to revolutionize furniture production, and now – due to a special collaboration with HAY – it’s available in a rich forest green color.
Eames Wire Base Low Table
The iconic Eames Wire Base Low Table has been reimagined in new colors and materials through a special collaboration with HAY. Now available with a durable glass top, this Eames classic can be used inside or out, bringing color and tactility to the living room or patio.
